The Canadian, Montreal-based duo Headscan fuses futuristic dancefloor music with dark cinematographic soundscapes, meshing these elements into a smooth, hypnotic sound. The group combines the best elements of trance and electro industrial resulting in a sound that is fresh and exciting, while holding true to its predecessors in electronic music.
Claude Charnier (music) & Christian Pomerleau (vocal and visual) have been active in Montreal's local alternative music scene for some years now, playing a hard and intense mix of electronic and acoustic music. Signed to Artoffact Records in 2001, they released their first album entitled Shaper and Mechanist to worldwide acclaim. Dark moods, electronic voices, bubbling basses, and relentless beats create a futuristic soundscape for the new dark ages inspired in parts by the writings of science-fiction author Bruce Sterling while resonating with the sounds of electro architects Daniel Myer, Uwe Schmidt, and others.
Headscan have been sought after as remixers for artists around the world including Psyche, Interlace, Negative Format, Aiboforcen, and most recently Germany’s Solitary Experiments. In 2002, Headscan worked with Belgian techno outfit Implant on a split release for Artoffact’s successful Uturn Series. This last release saw them collaborating with Montreal’s own DAT Machine for a high energy club track unparalleled in modern electronic music.
2003 saw Headscan appearing for a second time at Montreal’s Elektra Festival along with Vromb and Anthony Rother, playing shows with the likes of Assemblage 23, Dark Soho, and Clear Vision, as well as performing at New York’s CMJ Festival with Haujobb and Hocico. Always ready to stretch preconceived notions of performance art, Headscan’s live experience has included synched video projections, stunning light displays, live dance, spoken word, and ferocious, high-definition imagery.
Following these successes, Headscan took a short
break from live entertainment to work in their
studio on the upcoming album, Pattern Recognition.
Tracks from this new work, as well as many favorite,
will be showcased at their upcoming show on July
11th.
As the continuous onslaught of modern technology breaks down the barriers of culture and geography, the public domain becomes embedded in our collective mind; where the spirit meets the mechanical.
